Resident workers - Industry

Health Care and Social Assistance employs more of the Eastern Region's resident workforce than any other industry sector.

Industry sector data identifies the industries in which the residents of an area work either within the residing area or elsewhere. Comparing the industry sectors in which the Eastern Region residents are employed in the industry sectors that are located in the Eastern Region, indicates whether an economy draws on the skills offered by its own residents, or on a different set of skills imported from elsewhere in the region.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the jobs held by the resident workforce in the Eastern Region in 2021shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (63,467 people or 14.0%)
  • Retail Trade (45,504 people or 10.0%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (43,702 people or 9.6%)

In combination these three industries employed 152,673 people in total or 33.6% of the total resident workforce.

In comparison, Victoria employed 14.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.4% in Retail Trade and 8.4% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.

The major differences between the jobs held by the resident workforce of the Eastern Region and Victoria were:

  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (0.7% compared to 2.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Transport, Postal and Warehousing (3.3% compared to 4.7%)
  • A larger percentage of resident workforce employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (9.6% compared to 8.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of resident workforce employed in Public Administration and Safety (4.7% compared to 5.6%)

Emerging groups

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident workforce between 2016 and 2021 in the Eastern Region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+11,516 resident workforce)
  • Construction (+7,338 resident workforce)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+6,365 resident workforce)
  • Education and Training (+4,833 resident workforce)
