In the Eastern Region, Manufacturing had the largest total exports by industry, generating $12,086 million in 2023/24.

Exports by industry are sales of goods and services to non-resident households, businesses and other organisations, outside the Eastern Region boundaries. Exports (domestic) include all exports from the area to other parts of Australia. Exports (international) includes all exports from the Region to countries outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the Eastern Region in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing (12,086 million or 34.9%)
  • Wholesale Trade (4,924 million or 14.2%)
  • Education and Training (3,477 million or 10.0%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 20,487 million in total or 59.2% of the total exports by industry in the the Eastern Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Victoria accounted for 20.3% in Manufacturing; 5.9% in Wholesale Trade and 4.8% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of the Eastern Region and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of total exports by Manufacturing (34.9% compared to 20.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Financial and Insurance Services (1.3% compared to 11.6%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Wholesale Trade (14.2% compared to 5.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (3.1% compared to 8.4%)

Emerging groups

The total total exports by industry in the Eastern Region $decreased by -1,006 million between 2018/19 and 2023/24.

The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2018/19 and 2023/24 in the Eastern Region were for:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$769 million)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$560 million)
  • Retail Trade (+$424 million)
  • Arts and Recreation Services (+$380 million)
