Dominant groups
An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:
- Manufacturing ($8,475 million or 33.8%)
- Financial and Insurance Services ($2,535 million or 10.1%)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services ($1,745 million or 7.0%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $12,755 million in total or 50.8% of the total imports by industry in the the Canberra Region.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 33.5% in Manufacturing; 8.0% in Financial and Insurance Services and 6.8% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.
The major differences between total imports by industries of the Canberra Region and NSW were:
- A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (10.1% compared to 8.0%)
- A larger percentage of total imports by Health Care and Social Assistance (6.8% compared to 4.7%)
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (3.1% compared to 4.5%)
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (5.2% compared to 6.6%)

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2018/19 and 2023/24 in the Canberra Region were for:

- Financial and Insurance Services (+$369 million)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+$360 million)
