In the Canberra Region, Manufacturing had the largest total exports by industry, generating $3,609 million in 2023/24.

Exports by industry are sales of goods and services to non-resident households, businesses and other organisations, outside the Canberra Region boundaries. Exports (domestic) include all exports from the area to other parts of Australia. Exports (international) includes all exports from the Region to countries outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the Canberra Region in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing (3,609 million or 25.2%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (2,193 million or 15.3%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (1,621 million or 11.3%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 7,423 million in total or 51.9% of the total exports by industry in the the Canberra Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 16.3% in Manufacturing; 4.2% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing and 4.6% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of the Canberra Region and NSW were:

  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Financial and Insurance Services (0.4% compared to 13.1%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (15.3% compared to 4.2%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Manufacturing (25.2% compared to 16.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Mining (4.2% compared to 11.9%)

The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2018/19 and 2023/24 in the Canberra Region were for:

  • Manufacturing (+$1,103 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$440 million)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$303 million)
  • Retail Trade (+$294 million)
